Cosmic Girl

Level: Intermediate & above.

Timing: Approx 1 hour

Mats: Cassette player. Copy of 'Cosmic Girl' by Jamiroquai. Cut up hand outs of lyrics.

Aim: Teaching space vocab. Matching rhymes. Listening for specific information.

Procedure: Stage One

T: Elicit mind map of space vocab.

Stage Two - Pair Work

T: Tell Ss title of song and name of band. Ask them if they know the song.

Hand out cut up song lyrics, one set per pair. Inform Ss of rhyming pattern of the song and that they should use this information to help them piece the song together.

Stage Three

T: Play song. You may need to play it two or three times depending on your Ss.

Ss: Listen and check to see if they´re right. Rearrange lyrics if necessary.

T: Allow time for Ss to make any changes. Depending on the size of your class or on time limitations you can either go round checking the Ss efforts; get Ss to read the lyrics out (change S for each verse and chorus) and correct as you go; or put up the correct lyrics on an OHP.

Stage Four

T: Ask the class to think about what images the song generates in their minds, BUT to do so ALONE and in SILENCE! The point is that different people will have different images eg. will see the girl with different coloured hair/clothes etc. and we want to let people form their own image without being influenced by the ideas of others.

They then either draw a picture to represent the whole song or draw the cosmic girl, her spaceship and the planet that she comes from.

Remind them that we are only looking for very simple drawings and that they do NOT have to show their drawings to anyone if they do not wish to.

Back Up/Additional Work

This lesson could lead on to a discussion about the merits and demerits of space travel; or about the possible existence of extra terrestrials; or about science fiction.

The Ss could be asked to write about the meeting of the cosmic girl and the singer from the girl's perspective instead of from the singers.
